GRADUATE PROGRAM GUIDELINES:  2002-2003

  1. All students must have a plan of study approved by their thesis or project advisor before the end of the second quarter of full time M.S. study (or 18 credit hours of coursework).  This study plan must be submitted to the M.E. department (to be maintained in their folder), and the student must obtain a copy for his/her own record.
  2. Category II classes must include at least one course from IIA and IIB.
  3. All students are required to register and attend ME 580 for at least 3 quarters and make 1 research/thesis presentations before they graduate.  Students must make at least one more  presentation to a research group or at a conference.  The students must also register for ME 580 in the quarter they plan to make the presentation.  Attendance will be taken, and all students must have at least 80% attendance every quarter for 3 quarters.
  4. A maximum of 4 credit hours of Special Investigation (ME 589) can be included in the course plan.  Lecture classes taught as ME 589 are exempt from this policy.
  5. All students are expected to follow the general program guidelines.  Students receiving tuition scholarships, and/or stipends from the department must follow prescribed program of study and register for appropriate courses in each quarter.  Students with a deficient background in C programming should include ET 581N in the course plan.
  6. Students may get a waiver of ME 596 in consultation with their thesis/project advisor.  They must make up the 3 credit hours by choosing appropriate courses from Category II and III.
  7. Courses not selected in Category I or II can be used to fulfill requirements for Category III or elective courses.
  8. A thesis or project proposal must be submitted or presented to the student’s thesis or project committee at least 3 months before the final defense.  The proposal must have a dated cover page that is signed by the advisor.  This cover page is to be submitted to the department within a week after it is presented/submitted to the committee.
  9. In case the student does not fill in the course plan, the graduate committee will have the final authority to approve or disapprove, or modify the student’s plan of study.
  10. A student must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher in order to graduate with the M.S. degree, in Mechanical Engineering.  If the GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be placed on probation for a quarter.  If a student does not improve his/her GPA to 3.0 during the probation quarter, the student will be dropped from the program.
  11. When the student is ready to submit the thesis, all copies of the ‘report of the oral exam’ must be given to the graduate secretary along with a copy of thesis (signed by advisor).  The graduate chairman will not sign off on the forms before examining the thesis for appropriate format.  All students must read and follow the thesis guidelines.  These guidelines can be obtained from the ME graduate office (contact Ms. Cibula), or from the Students Records office.  At this time, all keys and items borrowed from department (such as Thesis copies) must be returned to the M.E. Dept. office.
  12. The thesis defense scheduling form must be approved by the advisor before it is given to the graduate chairman for signature.
  13. Before final submission of the thesis, students are advised to show a copy of the thesis to  the Dean’s office to get the thesis format approved.
  14. The plan of study approval forms can be obtained from Merry Cibula in Room 256 and must be submitted back to her after all required signatures are obtained.
  15. Students are strongly encouraged to develop an appropriate program of study and follow instructors’ guidelines regarding attendance.  Violation of departmental guidelines will impact financial aid decisions.  Copying or other unethical behavior will result in the student being reported to the graduate committee for disciplinary action.
  16. Special cases which do not fall within these guidelines, or require a waiver of a guideline, will be decided upon by the graduate committee.
  17. Only the graduate chairman will approve practical training visa request forms and sign on OPT/CPT forms required by the international students office.  Students can not be approved for CPT until the thesis or project report is submitted to the graduate committee through the advisor.  All Stocker keys and items borrowed from department (such as Thesis copies) must be returned to the ME department office before the CPT forms will be signed by the graduate chairman.  You are required to finish the thesis and graduate within one year after the CPT is finished.
  18. The committee for a thesis option will consist of two ME faculty and one external college representative.  Students in the non-thesis option will have a committee of two ME faculty and they must sign up for 6 hours of ME681.  The non-thesis option students can present their project to the committee in an ME580 presentation.
  19. Students MUST turn in the Thesis Defense forms to the Dean's Office, and provide a hard copy of the thesis to the committee, at least 14 days before their defense date. (Forms can be picked up from Ms. Cibula.)
  20. Students may not take any courses outside the program of study until they have completed 7 courses from the recommended list of courses and received committee approval for their research proposal (all exceptions must be approved by graduate committee).
